When work requirements for SNAP benefits (also known as food stamps) were waived by the Fiscal Responsibility Act three years ago, it sent a clear message to individuals who were homeless, veterans or young adults aging out of foster care: You’re a charity case.

lamented that compromise when it was slipped into the 2023 debt ceiling bill as much as I celebrated its recension in the One Big Beautiful Bill last November. Thankfully, it now mandates work requirements for all able-bodied adults without dependents who receive food stamps.
